Engine Drop Bolts

Working on the 450 and Roadster engine is tricky due to the small engine bay and the way it’s packaged. For many jobs, it’s essential to lower the engine.

It could be argued that you aren’t so much” lowering the engine” but “lifting the car” but either way it gives you more room to work.

The engine sits in a cradle and it’s held to the cradle with 3 engine mounts. We won’t touch those. However, the engine cradle is bolted to the car with 4 bolts. These engine drop bolts replace the 4 engine cradle bolts, then you jack the car up and the cradle stays in position. You get 2 different lengths of bolts. The longest bolts go towards the rear of the car and the shorter bolts go towards the front of the car.

Smart did originally sell these but they generally wouldn’t sell to the public. BGS made copies but they don’t look to be available any more. So we made our own. Instead of trying to get long bolts with a ridiculous thread so we just bought threaded rod. Smart’s bolts are heat treated which is an odd choice. HT is meant for clamping force and not lateral force so hanging 100kg from them didn’t seem wise.
